Introduction
On 24th July 2023 the Harness Education and Health Trust was registered with the NZ Charities Services. This new trust was created to provide a formal framework for monies that had been donated for the education and health of young people in the harness racing industry. As the existing funds had been donated or raised in the Waikato the trust will give priority to initiatives in the Waikato but under the purposes of the Trust it is not restricted to the Waikato but can be used NZ wide.
History
The initial fund was created in the 1990s by Rod Carmichael, at that time director of cadet training in the Waikato, significant donations were made to the fund by Rod Carmichael and others primarily Charlie Elliot and the estate of Charlie and Dawn Elliot. Recently the signatories have decided that they wish to donate these funds to a new trust hence the creation of Harness Education and Health Trust.
The new trust is very thankful for the fore thought, management and enthusiasm of the original signatories Rod Carmichael, Judy Alexander and Tom Taumanu.
In recent years the fund has supported cadet school prizegiving, media training and work experience trips to Australia.
The Trust
The fund holders decided to formalise the account and broaden its purpose as is seen in the trust document.
The Trust has been formed to put this on a more structured and regulated basis and provide for wider coverage of needs of young people in Harness racing as explained in the Trust Document.
